For the second year running, Wycombe faced East Dorset in the quarter-final of the Mary Rose. Last year we travelled to the south coast and came away with a 6-0 victory, so this year the Dorset team travelled to us hoping for revenge.

Unfortunately a traffic incident on the M3 meant that only two of the Dorset team had arrived by the scheduled start time of 10 am.  We decided to start the other two singles matches in any case, and Chris Roberts quickly gave the home team a 1-0 lead with a solid victory over AC newcomer Steve Leonard.  Conveniently, this coincided with the arrival of Dorset’s third player, Tom Weston. Meanwhile on lawn 2, Richard Peperell had a close match against David Williams but came out on top to make it 2-0, and shortly after that, Mike Porter completed a victory over Tom to give Wycombe an insurmountable 3-0 lead at lunchtime.

In the afternoon, Mike and Chris had an entertaining doubles victory over Tom and David, while Richard’s match against Steve lasted the full 3 hours.  Richard prevailed by a narrow 4 -point margin, giving Wycombe a 5-0 victory and Richard a second handicap reduction in as many weeks.

Chris Roberts beat Steve Leonard +25
Richard Peperell beat David Williams +8
Mike Porter beat Tom Weston +7

Mike and Chris beat Tom and David +4
Richard beat Steve +4(t)

The Recreation Ground is on the A404 between High Wycombe and Amersham.  If approaching from the north, travel 400m south from the Hazlemere double roundabout, slow down at Holy Trinity Church on your left and look for a small road on your right with a green and white Croquet Club and Recreation Ground signs. Coming from the south e.g., from the M40  or A40, take the A404  through the centre of High Wycombe.  Pass the Royal Grammar School on your left and after one further mile look for the  small road on your left with a green and white Croquet Club and Recreation Ground signs.
