'One good thing from croquet': Some successes

"Winning my first tournament!"

A dark tale from Sally Rogers:

My most startling win was in a club competition match.  The match was long and it started to get dark, in fact, so dark that I couldn't see the duller coloured balls from a distance.  I was winning 6-5, and standing back from hoop 11 I aimed my red ball to hopefully stop in front of hoop 12.  I expected it would get hit away as the blue ball was close by.  To my right, I heard the thwack of mallet on black ball and then came the sound of ball on ball.  As I prepared to play my yellow ball into the darkness my opponent came towards me with outstretched hand  'Congratulations!'

(My red was close in front of hoop 12 and the blue and black balls had disappeared off the court. There was little chance of my opponent seeing the red ball in the dark from that distance let alone hitting it.  We had quite some trouble even finding where the balls had disappeared to!)

CA Gazette Cover star Duncan Reeve explains all:
We got on the front cover of the Gazette - a first for me personally and a first for HWCC.

We really were there at 7.30 am on 13th May, to meet a top-dressing delivery, and we had a game.  But there was noone else there to take a photo.  Chris Roberts (Gazette Editor) thought it would make a good picture, so we re-staged it some weeks later - and almost forgot to adjust the clock !

Chris, please help!. For my wife's birthday I had made a beautiful garden pond.
The pond is four feet deep and a misjudged strike can end up with the loss of a croquet ball. I am trying to ascertain whether the rules say anything about floating croquet balls.
The Rules give many specific requirements in relation to the physical properties. But before starting an experimental programme I look forward to any suggestions.. Are there any rules which allow games of three players and three balls?
All suggestions will be tried. With grateful thanks Ronnie

The Recreation Ground is on the A404.  If approaching from the north, travel 400m south from the Hazlemere double roundabout, slow down at Holy Trinity Church on your left and look for a small road on your right with Croquet Club and Recreation Ground signs. Coming from the south (High Wycombe) direction, we are about a kilometre north of the Royal Grammar School.
