Remember the Lambertometer made by Michael Bowker to measure the speed of our lawns?  Well, here it is in use.

The CA has introduced new tournament regulations mandating a dry lawn speed of 10 seconds on the Plummer test. This translates into a Lambertometer reading of 3.73m (12.2 feet) for our lawns, which we will be working towards.

For the technically minded we achieved a distance of 3.02m (9.90 feet) averaged over several readings at different angles, on a damp lawn. The Plummer test (time it takes for a ball to travel 35 yards) was 9.0 seconds. We will have to maintain a record of simultaneous Lambertometer and Plummer readings to allow us to calculate a conversion factor between the two, using a particular mathematical formula (lawn speed = constant * sqrt(distance).

On the basis of this first test the constant is 2.86 (measuring distance in feet), but we'll refine this as time goes on.

The Recreation Ground is on the A404.  If approaching from the north, travel 400m south from the Hazlemere double roundabout, slow down at Holy Trinity Church on your left and look for a small road on your right with Croquet Club and Recreation Ground signs. Coming from the south (High Wycombe) direction, we are about a kilometre north of the Royal Grammar School.
