Levelling the lawns

25/5/2023

Following the frustrations of a very rainy Spring, lawn two was levelled today by our valiant ground staff, father and son team of Russell and Aaron, with help or (hopefully not) hindrance from Guy Priestley and your now exhausted Chairman. Mary Whimster and Nigel Moore were the only other members to volunteer for the original dates but sadly could not make today’s date. Thank you Mary and Nigel.  Further thanks to those lovely members who endured the cancellation of one of their bookings and the activities off lawn.

 I can certainly say that it was hot work barrowing the soil. I did it for an hour and a bit before  young Aaron arrived to relieve me to collapse in the clubhouse taking on liquids.

The sequence was, as I understand it;
  • Some watering over previous day or so.
  • Grass seed scattered.
  • Top dressing spread by being flung from a shovel from piles that I delivered to the lawn.
  • 1 hour for the top dressing soil/sand to dry in the sunshine.
  • Use of the club’s huge and heavy “lute” ( see vid) to fill the dips.
  • Spread lawn feed.
  • Make a gentle cut with the mower.
  • And tonight the sprinkler will come on for a while.
  • Total approx. 4 hours.

I was also very pleased to utilise one of the two bags of topsoil that have cluttered the car park for far too long.
The second bag will be used for lawn one thus improving our club’s image with those using the recreation ground.
