High Wycombe have won the SCF association croquet B-league for the last three seasons, but at about 3pm on Thursday 6th August our chances for a fourth successive title seemed to be fading away in the sweltering sun.
Our opponents, Winchester, had only been able to field two players rather than the usual three so we went into the match with a 1-0 lead – but those two players were the ones making all the hoops. Roger Barnacle was close to victory against Mike Porter, leading by 22 hoops to 3, while Ian Harrison was well ahead of Alan Clark. However, no lead is safe in Association Croquet, and the home team gradually came back into it. Eventually, Mike prevailed by the narrowest possible margin, 26-25, and a few minutes later Alan completed his comeback to win 26-19, sealing a 3-0 victory for the team and putting us to the top of the league table.
