Final of the Longman Cup 2020

7/5/2021

The long-awaited Longman Cup 2020 final finally took place on 25th April in Surbiton. HWCC and St Albans battled out a tense set of matches to decide who would be crowned champions.

In the morning session, after a nervy start by both players, Ed Olhausen managed to win his singles match 26-15. Mark Higgins and Robin Morrison paired up for a very tight doubles match which finished 16-15 to St Albans. The competition was finely balanced at 1-1 going into the afternoon session's singles matches.

Ed Olhausen then stepped up a gear or two and took his first ball around all 12 hoops in one turn. The game was wrapped up in 45 mins with Ed winning 26-0. So, now it's 2-1 to HWCC. Mark endured a scrappy game against his opponent and was finally beaten 12-17. Finely balanced at 2-2 and on we went into the final 15 minutes of Robin's game, with Robin 4 points to chase. The pressure was on to build a break in the dying minutes and despite his best efforts, it wasn't to be, with the game finishing 13-17.

Congratulations to St Albans on their victory. Thank you to the HWCC members who played in previous rounds to  help get us to the final. A Runner's Up plate is still a fantastic achievement. We will aim to go one better in 2021.
