Another missive from Olly the Owl

ANOTHER MISSIVE FROM OLLY

It is me again, Olly the Owl from Hazlemere Treetops.   Last night my cousin from Southwick, who lives near the croquet club there, flew in for a chat.

She told me that she had seen lots of ‘dancing about with balls and long hammers’ on her large area grass – some sort of competition it seems.  She had recognised the white-hatted chappie that I wrote about last time as he had been there several times before.  She thinks he won something in a competition as he got a handshake at the end.  (Editor's note: see photo, Ian’s partner Keith Pound, with whom he won the GC Open Doubles Plate Competition, had had to leave by the time the presentation was made.  Raouf was also at the same competition, and was staying on for the GC Open Singles).

The same white-hatted chappie was then seen being given some sort of test involving him carefully watching balls being played and saying “fault” and “clean” seemingly at random times.  Anyway, apparently he got whatever it was right, as he was given another handshake at the end.  (Editor: Ian qualified as a GC Championship Referee).

By the way – I see someone has been listening to what I have said about your gate – very smart colours.  I thought they were meant to be a badly arranged rainbow then realised that they seem to match those coloured spheres that I see being hit about the grass.

The over-gate ‘welcome’ sign also seems a good thing.  But I wait to see whether all this work has had any effect on the noise the gate used to make – I really do like my beauty sleep during the day, so I hope so!

Yours, in hope,

Olly
