A draw in the dark

Wycombe’s second fixture in the AC A-league took place at 5pm on 30th August, or rather, it should have taken place at 5pm. One of Wycombe’s players was travelling from Manchester on the day of the match and inevitably there was a traffic snarl-up on the M40, meaning one game didn’t start until 6.20.  The relevance of this will become clear…

In the top game, Joel Taylor continued his fine play, beating Anthony Hardwicke with another triple peel, the score being 26TP-5.  However, in the second game, Mike Porter was struggling to get going against Peter Allen and, as the sun went down at about 8 o’clock, Peter pegged out one of his balls, leaving himself on peg vs. hoops 1 and 6.  At this stage, Mike remembered how to play, and took a three-ball break to the peg: 6 and peg vs peg alone.  Peter missed his shot at the peg and Mike embarked upon another three-ball break – increasingly difficult when it’s too dark to see the next hoop!  He made it as far as 3-back but played a poor approach, and Peter could just about see the peg well enough to hit it for a deserved 26-20 victory.

Final score Blewbury 1-1 High Wycombe.

The Recreation Ground is on the A404.  If approaching from the north, travel 400m south from the Hazlemere double roundabout, slow down at Holy Trinity Church on your left and look for a small road on your right with Croquet Club and Recreation Ground signs. Coming from the south (High Wycombe) direction, we are about a kilometre north of the Royal Grammar School.
