There goes the AC league...?

22/8/2025

A draw in High Wycombe’s last A-league match of the season has left the team relying on other results to retain their title.

The match, at home to Aldermaston, had been scheduled to take place in June but one of the visiting team’s players pulled out at the last minute with a broken thumb. So only the first half of the match was played, Wycombe’s Rich Waterman pulling off a narrow 26-24 win against Andy Myers.

Fast forward to August and the second leg, between Mike Porter and Steve Woolnough (thumb now recovered), could take place.  Both players were shooting well throughout the match, but Steve was the more fluent in his break play, and got to rover and peg with Mike still for 2 and 4-back and down to his last chance. Playing with his hoop 2 ball, he managed to run his first hoop with a very angled jump shot, then established a break and took it to 4-back.  As anyone who knows Mike would have predicted, he decided to attempt a straight triple peel rather than adopting a more conservative line of play… and as many of those would also have predicted, he came up short!  Two peels were completed but a poor hoop shot at rover meant that Steve was gifted two balls at his hoop and he gratefully finished for a 26-22 victory.

So our season is ended with one match win and two draws. While we’re currently in first place in the league, Blewbury will be able to take the title if they win their remaining match against Basingstoke.

Watch this space!
