Another good AC win

The latest match in the A-league season was an away fixture at Basingstoke. Rich Waterman and Mike Porter travelled there for an evening fixture on a balmy summer evening.

Regular readers will recall that the team specialises in failing to complete triple peels in interesting ways.  On this occasion, Mike had played two very tidy breaks against Roger Barnacle, completing all three peels and giving himself a straightforward rush to the peg… which he overhit by about 5 yards and missed the peg-out. However, two turns later he completed a quick 26-8 victory.

By contrast… Rich Waterman and Don Beck were engaged in a war of attrition, with both players seemingly keen that the other one should win.  In the closing stages of the game, Don had pegged out one of Rich’s balls and was for penult and peg, and Rich was for rover.  Don failed penult, Rich hit in… and failed a longish attempt at rover.  Don got back in, failed penult again, Rich hit in again… and overhit his approach to go beyond rover.  Don set up a rush to penult, Rich hit in again and finally made his final hoop, pegging out for a 26-22 victory after three and a quarter hours, nearly two hours after the previous game ended.

Much good-natured ribbing ensued on a cheerful drive back to Bucks, and the team is now well placed to retain its A-league title.
