Not the town, fortunately, but an enjoyable SCF Handicap match being played at HWCC on
29 May. As Ian, Geoff J, Richard and Chris welcomed our opponents the sky was overcast and
the weather breezy but dry. That was to change.
The morning’s doubles ended all square. Extra turns played a part, being used especially
skilfully by Martin, captaining Basingstoke and playing with Barbara, whose first competitive
match this was. Two matches ended at the 13th hoop.
Faint drizzle at the end of lunch increased steadily through the first round of singles. All four
High Wycombe players won their games, with Ian winning at the Golden Hoop after having
overcome no fewer than 11 extra turns for his opponent! But the weather was starting to
become a distraction, the rain now falling heavily. And when thunder was heard and
lightning seen, it was agreed that the match could not continue. (Subsequently, Basingstoke
graciously conceded, leaving HW winners by 6 games to 2, officially then 8 - 4.) With cake and cheerful, if
damp, conversation, the day ended.
