At the start of July, Alan Clark, David Warhurst, Raouf Allim and Ian Shore took part in the Southern Challenge, an inter-club tournament run by the South Eastern Croquet Federation. But we belong to the Southern Croquet Federation, so why were we there?
High Wycombe had been invited in recognition of our players’ improvement over recent years. We felt privileged to take part.
The event was blessed with perfect croquet weather. The 11 lawns were in excellent condition, showing no evidence of the recent lack of rain. The event involved both doubles and singles with singles games counting towards national rankings and handicap cards. The tournament was indeed a challenge with most players in the range -1 to 2 but with some, notably from Dulwich, with even better handicaps!
It would be invidious to pick out our individual performances as it was very much a team activity. We started well and while there were some occasional dips, we remained strong throughout. It was no surprise that Dulwich won the competition overall. We were, however, delighted, if slightly surprised, to be ranked third.
So, very well done, David, Alan, Raouf and Ian.
