Doubles Only, by Geoff Brook
Our opening match vs Eynsham away started with the opening games 1-1. It seemed as if we were in for a tight match, however five games with only one going to the golden hoop saw Wycombe runaway winners.
Next up was Wingrave at home and a similar story. ‘Even Stevens’ on the first two games and then the Wycombe team played to their handicaps and again a 6 –2 win.
A much closer match followed at Thames Valley which we won 5 – 3 although no golden hoops an afternoon of tight games followed by the traditional Abingdon tea.
Winslow at home was a complete whitewash with Wycombe winning 8 – 1 against a weak visiting team.
The last match against Harwell at home was make or break as Eynsham could have taken the cup had we lost. Our stalwarts did not falter and beat a strong Harwell side 7-1.
Ten members played in these league matches, Ralph Baker, Bill Black, Geoff Brook, Michael Bowker, Sharon Clark, Keith Toovey, Ian Shore, Kay Vickery, Mike Vickery and Chris Webbley. Many thanks for their efforts.
We hold the cup for a third year!
Level League, by Ian Shore
We came a creditable third out of eight by winning 5 out of 7 matches played. While we were equal on points with second-placed Winchester, they won more rubbers and so take the higher place. Phyllis Court won the league (even though we beat them!) The full table of results is shown below.
In summary, a close-run competition which went down to the wire. Well done all. There is a lot to build on for next year!
Handicap North, HW Kestrels by Kay Vickery
At the end of the 2019 season, the High Wycombe Kestrels team came 2nd. This is an excellent result in our first season in this league.
As you can see from the table below, we ended with 10 points, the same number as the winning team Phyllis Court B (and had even beaten them earlier in the season). The margin was close: Phyllis Court B won 5 of their 8 matches, compared to with Kestrels’ 4 wins and 2 draws, and 71 games against our 69.
Congratulations to everyone involved: Ian Shore, Keith Pound, Marc Allan, Michael Bowker, Mike Vickery, Ralph Baker and Sally Rogers, all of whom I hope will be prepared to play for the Kestrels again next year!
Handicap North, HW Kites by Chris Webbley
This, our first season, was one of two halves. We got off to something of a stuttering start, winning just one of our first four matches. But three wins in a row then put us into a better position. Could we bring off a good result against the mighty Phyllis Court ‘B’ and secure a solid place in the table? Alas, the weather had other ideas, a forecast of 38 degrees prompting PC to request a postponement. The replacement Kites team all did their very best but we lost 10-6, thus coming 6th in the final order.
The Kites spent many enjoyable hours playing croquet, though, with a good team spirit. My thanks go to Brian Maple, Catherine Shore, our three Geoffs Brook, Johnson and Youd, Keith Toovey, Nick Jones, Pauline Spiller and Sharon Clark.
