More wonderful weather saw a strong team travel to Winchester (handicaps 1, 2, 2, 3) for this level GC match. However, Winchester won this league last year and spirits were tempered slightly when we saw their team (handicaps -1, -1, -1, 1)!! Pleasingly, our team stepped up to the challenge to ensure an exciting day’s croquet. In the morning, Michael Bowker eased past their number 4 fairly comfortably, whilst Keith Pound just lost to their number 3, 6-7 in the third game, picking up a handful of index points in the process. In the top pairs’ doubles, Ian Shore and Alan Clark came second against a formidable pair. So no disgrace there. In the afternoon we needed a 3-1 win in the remaining singles for the match. A tall order. Every game was very close but we just missed out when the only actual winner was Keith. The 2-5 defeat does not represent how close the match was, and the whole team enjoyed the day.
