High Wycombe Croquet Club was invited to help celebrate the theme of Alice in Wonderland by setting up a croquet lawn for the event. Around one hundred people sat at tables in the beautiful surroundings and enjoyed the tea and cakes provided by the NT staff.
When the tea and cakes were over our croquet players invited people to take part in the game. The first on the lawn was Alice and friends.
Soon many people, having finished their tea, decided to join in and with the help of Jane Gloster, David Gantzel, Michael Bowker, Mike and Kay Vickery and Ronnie Lewin, the croquet lawn was heaving with people and balls were flying in all directions. The strict rules of croquet were enriched by the Hughenden Rules; in fact this made for a very challenging game where the lawn sloped towards High Wycombe and the grass resembled a recently cut corn field.
As the shadows started to lengthen and people began to return home our happy but exhausted team sat down and reflected on a memorable time in idyllic surroundings.
We thank Moira and her NT staff for all their hard work and for inviting us to share in a most enjoyable evening.
